ATLANTA–Georgia State University is among the top research universities in the United States to receive grants under the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar program of the U.S. State Department during the 2017-18 academic year.
Georgia State tied for sixth place along with Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University and two institutions of the University of California system, among other universities, as one of the top 18 research institutions with faculty scholars under the Fulbright U.S. Scholar program.
“Under its strategic plan, Georgia State continues to strive toward its goal of achieving distinction in globalizing the university, in addition to becoming a leading research university addressing the most challenging issues of the 21st century,” said Risa Palm, senior vice president of academic affairs and provost at Georgia State. “Faculty receiving grants under the program are engaging in important research and scholarship that builds upon the university’s growing distinction in addressing significant global issues, and also contribute to Georgia State’s expanding research profile.”
“Congratulations to our faculty who have received this prestigious honor, and we wish them the best as they use this opportunity to further enrich their vital work,” she said.
The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. More than 1,000 U.S. college and university faculty and administrators, professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers and independent scholars are awarded Fulbright grants to teach and/or conduct research annually. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program operates in more than 125 countries around the world.
“Georgia State’s top ranking in sending Fulbright recipients demonstrates the reach of its global network in research and scholarship,” said Wolfgang Schlör, associate provost for International Initiatives at Georgia State.
The Fulbright Program also awards grants to U.S. students and teachers to conduct research and teach overseas. In addition, some 4,000 foreign Fulbright students and scholars come to the United States annually to study, lecture, conduct research and teach foreign languages.
