Anthony F. (Tony) Lemieux, Director, Global Studies Institute
ATLANTA–Anthony F. Lemieux, director of the Global Studies Institute and professor of global studies and communication, has been named an American Council of Education (ACE) Fellow for 2018-19. He is one of 45 fellows selected nationwide.
The ACE Fellows Program is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing faculty and staff for senior positions in college and university administration. More than 80 percent of Fellows have gone on to serve as senior leaders of colleges and universities.
The American Council of Education is the major coordinating body for all the nation’s higher education institutions, representing nearly 1,800 college and university presidents and related associations.
As director of the Global Studies Institute, Lemieux has focused on collaborative, interdisciplinary research into issues of pressing global importance. He pulls from research on health-behavior change, persuasion and communication to analyze terrorist propaganda. One recent project funded by the Department of Homeland Security created an augmented reality program to examine the impact of grievance on terrorism.
Lemieux came to Georgia State as part of the university’s Second Century Initiative (2CI), which helped to build nationally and internationally recognized strengths and critical mass around common research themes to enhance the institution’s overall quality, interdisciplinary richness, and competitiveness.
As an ACE Fellow, Lemieux will participate in retreats and campus visits. He will also be placed at another higher education institution to observe and work with its president and other senior officers. As part of his participation in the program, he will also design a project to be implemented at Georgia State after his year in the program is over.
