ELAW began from efforts by the Advancement of Women initiative to develop leadership programming in 2005, gaining its current title in 2012.
In 2021, ELAW became dedicated to staff members, while a parallel program for faculty was established, the Leadership Academy for Women Faculty (LAWF).
ELAW is administered through the Office of Faculty Affairs and is supported by the Office of the Provost in conjunction with participation by faculty and staff from other units around the university, including but not limited to the Office of the President and the WomenLead program of the J. Mack Robinson College of Business.
ELAW’s parallel program for faculty, LAWF, is planned to return in the 2025-26 academic year. (Application information will be announced during the Spring 2025 semester.)
