Introducing New Faculty Associates for Perimeter College and for Research, Scholarship and Creativity
Georgia State’s Office of the Provost and Office of Faculty Affairs are pleased to introduce the GSU community to two new faculty associates, who will be instrumental in the institution’s efforts to support faculty in teaching, research, scholarship and creativity.
Faculty Associate for Perimeter College
Rhiannon Evangelista
Rhiannon Evangelista is an Associate Professor of History at Perimeter College and Faculty Associate for Perimeter College in the Office of Faculty Affairs. Dr. Evangelista joined Georgia State in 2017 and, before coming to the Office of Faculty Affairs, she served as the Assistant Chair of the History and Political Science Department on the Clarkston Campus. In her position in the Office of Faculty Affairs, Dr. Evangelista connects Perimeter College faculty to the offerings of the OFA. She also runs Perimeter-specific and university-wide faculty programming. As a historian, Dr. Evangelista’s research specialties include the history of regime change, legacies of dictatorship in new democracies, and twentieth-century Italy. At Perimeter, she teaches world history and United States history. She is an alumna of the university’s Leadership Academy for Women Faculty (LAWF) and participated in OFA’s Write-In Network, which supports faculty writing goals. Dr. Evangelista holds a Ph.D. in history from Emory University, and is a member of the American Historical Association, the Society for Italian Historical Studies, and the Association for the Study of Modern Italy.
Faculty Associate for Research, Scholarship and Creativity
Ashwin Ashok
Ashwin Ashok is an Associate Professor and Associate Graduate Director in the Department of Computer Science, and Office of Faculty Affairs Faculty Associate for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities at Georgia State. He directs the MORSE Studio laboratory where his group focuses on systems research in emerging technologies in mobile and robotic systems through experiential work. He received a National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2022 for advancing mobile visible light (optical wireless) communication. His research interest spans areas in communications and networking, autonomous and robotic systems, precision agriculture and environmental systems, mobile health and animal behavior. Before starting at Georgia State in Fall 2016, he completed his postdoctoral research from Carnegie Mellon University and doctoral research from Wireless Information Network Lab (WINLAB) earning the Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rutgers University. He serves on the program committee for several ACM and IEEE conferences and journals, and currently as an Editor for Elsevier Vehicular Communications (VEHCOM) and vice-chair for IEEE P1920.2 (Vehicle to Vehicle Communications for Unmanned Aircraft Systems) standard working group committee. He currently is the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Atlanta Chapter President and is an advisor for multiple student clubs including Georgia State’s IEEE Student branch, Girls-Who-Code, Tech4Creatives, Robotics, and Rocket Technologies. He enjoys playing cricket at the competitive level, singing, playing the mridangam (an Indian classical percussion instrument), traveling, movies, and food-hopping.
