John Horgan Recognized for Leadership with the Violent Extremism Research Group
Distinguished University Professor John Horgan was recognized on April 25, 2025 by the Atlanta field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation with its Directors’ Community Leadership Award for dedication in directing GSU’s Violent Extremism Research Group.
Established in 1990, the award honors individuals who are making a meaningful impact in their communities by advancing education and working to prevent crime and violence. One person or organization from each of the bureau’s 55 field offices is chosen to receive the award.
His internationally recognized research and scholarship have helped to inform scientists, policymakers, and the public to better understand the pathways and processes by which people become attracted to, engaged with, and importantly – disengaged from violent extremist ideologies and activities.
He has over 120 publications, and his books include The Psychology of Terrorism (now in its second edition and published in a dozen languages), Divided We Stand: The Strategy and Psychology of Ireland’s Dissident Terrorists; and Walking Away from Terrorism.
