Georgia State Recognizes Faculty Excellence through Distinguished University Professorships and University Awards
ATLANTA—Georgia State University Provost Nicolle Parsons-Pollard has announced the appointment and reappointment of university faculty to its highest institutional-level faculty rank, the Distinguished University Professorship.
The appointment of Distinguished University Professor at Georgia State is intended to recognize a sustained and outstanding record in scholarship and instruction, and to provide the impetus for continuing high achievement.
Distinguished University Professors are expected to serve the university as exemplary faculty members by contributing to its research, instructional and service missions.
The appointed and reappointed faculty include:
New Appointments
- Anthony Craig Drennen, Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design, College of the Arts
- Donald Hamelberg, Chemistry, College of Arts & Sciences
- Cathy Liu, Public Management and Policy, Andrew Young School of Policy Studies
- Liang Peng, Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Science, Robinson College of Business
- Therese Pigott, Department of Educational Policy Studies, College of Education & Human Development
- Marilynn Richtarik, English, College of Arts & Sciences
- Jelena Subotić, Political Science, College of Arts & Sciences
Reappointments
- Sarah Brosnan, Psychology, College of Arts & Sciences
- Javier Stern, Neuroscience, College of Arts & Sciences
- Dan Whitaker, Health Policy and Behavioral Sciences, School of Public Health
- Bingzhong Xue, Biology, College of Arts & Sciences
The term of the Distinguished University Professor is five years and may be renewed once upon successful reapplication and reevaluation. No more than 5 percent of the university’s tenured faculty members may hold this title at any time.
Additional information about faculty who have been appointed or reappointed with the University System of Georgia’s highest professorial ranking, the Regents’ Professorship, will be announced after board approval.
Further, Georgia State also highlighted faculty excellence through its annual GSU faculty awards. The award winners include the following. Award descriptions are linked in each award name below:

- Exceptional Service Award: Ursula Thomas, Cultural and Behavioral Sciences, Perimeter College
- Kavita Pandit Mentoring Excellence Award: Mindy Stombler, Sociology, College of Arts & Sciences
- Outstanding Non-Tenure Track Faculty Achievement Award: Jonathan Sylvester, Biology, College of Arts & Sciences
- Outstanding Non-Tenure Track Faculty Achievement Award: Stephanie Kerce, Department of Political Science, College of Arts & Sciences
- Outstanding Tenure Track Faculty Achievement Award: Natalie King, Department of Middle and Secondary Education, College of Education & Human Development
Faculty instructional awards sponsored by the university’s Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning & Online Education will be announced at a later date. These awards honor faculty for their innovations and effectiveness in teaching and learning.
