Outstanding Faculty Recognized with Georgia State’s Distinguished University Professorships

Georgia State University has appointed and reappointed faculty to its highest institutional-level faculty rank, the Distinguished University Professorship.

The appointment of Distinguished University Professor at Georgia State is intended to recognize a sustained and outstanding record in scholarship and instruction, and to provide the impetus for continuing high achievement.

Distinguished University Professors are expected to serve the university as exemplary faculty members by contributing to its research, instructional, and service missions.

WABE Studios Team With Maurice Hobson Wins Southeast Regional EMMY Awards for Documentary on the 1906 Atlanta Race Massacre

Dr. Maurice Hobson, Associate Professor of Africana Studies, is part of a team with WABE Studios which recently garnered three Southeast Regional EMMY Awards for “(re)Defining History: Uncovering the 1906 Atlanta Race Massacre.”

Hosted by Dr. Hobson, this documentary from WABE Studios in partnership with the National Center for Civil and Human Rights explores the truth behind the terror of four days in September 1906 where 25 African Americans were killed and hundreds more were injured, what led to the violence, and how it spawned resilience in Atlanta’s Black community.

Georgia State Neuroscientist Honored with Lehrman Lifetime Achievement Award

Georgia State Neuroscientist Honored with Lehrman Lifetime Achievement Award

Regents’ Professor of Neuroscience and Biology Geert de Vries has been awarded the Daniel S. Lehrman Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology.

Established in 2006, the award honors the lifetime achievements of investigators who have an exemplary record of research, scholarship and mentorship, and who have served the field in leadership roles. Only one recipient is selected each year.

De Vries’ groundbreaking research has unveiled critical insights into sex differences in the brain. His team studies how sex hormones and chromosomes shape our brains and influence behaviors. He was the first to find that male brains produce more vasopressin than female brains.

The Path Forward 2024: The COACHE II Action Plan Is Now Available

The Office of the Provost is pleased to present a plan of action in response to the feedback from the university’s second COACHE survey, administered in 2023.

The university-level plan, “The Path Forward 2024,” is divided into four broad areas identified for improvement, with 14 steps as goals for achievement. These steps address the specific issues raised in the survey regarding service, teaching, benefits and salary, and personal and family policies.

Kim Manturuk Appointed Executive Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Online Education (CETLOE) Effective July 1

Kim Manturuk has been appointed as the next Executive Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Online Education (CETLOE), effective July 1.

Dr. Manturuk is currently a Lecturer of Sociology and Director of the Office of Curricular Evaluation at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

She has held a variety of administrative positions at institutions in the Raleigh-Durham Research Triangle, including as an associate director at Duke University’s Research, Evaluation, and Development unit, which is a part of its Learning Innovation and Lifetime Education center.

Georgia State Researcher Receives $6.9 Million in Grants to Develop and Test Tobacco Education Strategies

With the U.S. Food and Drug Administration considering landmark regulations that would significantly limit the amount of nicotine in cigarettes and ban menthol flavoring, a Georgia State University researcher is proactively developing and testing targeted messages to improve public health.

Funded by a five-year, $3.9 million grant from the National Cancer Institute and the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, a team led by Associate Professor Lucy Popova in the GSU School of Public Health will develop and test messages that can accompany the policy of reducing nicotine in combusted cigarettes by 95 percent to minimally or non-addictive levels. Because smoking is more common among those with psychological distress and those with low socioeconomic status, this project will specifically focus on these groups.

In a separate five-year, $3 million project that was recently funded by the National Cancer Institute, Popova will develop and test messages that aim to reduce tobacco use among menthol cigarette smokers with low socioeconomic status.
