Faculty Spotlight: Deepa Muralidhar

Faculty Spotlight: Deepa Muralidhar

After nearly two decades of experience in computer science research and education, Deepa Muralidhar is now an instructor and Ph.D. candidate at Georgia State University.

Instructor Muralidhar’s career began at Madurai Kamaraj University in Tamil Nadu, India where she earned her undergraduate degree in computer engineering. She then moved to the U.S. where she received a master’s degree in computer science (CS) at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Ga. After teaching CS in Georgia high schools for over 17 years, she took on a computer science lecturer role at Kennesaw State University (KSU).

Instructor Muralidhar’s transition to Georgia State was guided by her two mentors: Dr. Ashwin Ashok, her Ph.D. advisor, and Dr. Lisa Armistead, Dean of the Graduate School. She cited Dr. Ashok as the reason she started her Ph.D. at GSU. Learn more by clicking the story link.

Updates from the Office of Academic Affairs

On Dec. 4, 2024, Senior Associate Provost for Academic Affairs Michael Galchinsky announced two significant updates to the leadership of the division.

Dr. John Duffield, the university’s Director of Academic Program Review, will retire at the end of December 2024 after an exemplary 22-year tenure at Georgia State.

Dr. Michelle Brattain, a Professor of History, has been appointed as the inaugural Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs effective January 2025.

Faculty Spotlight: Talwinder Singh

Faculty Spotlight: Talwinder Singh

After years of developing expertise in space weather forecasting and weather modeling, Dr. Talwinder Singh has joined Georgia State University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

In his research, Dr. Singh focuses on space weather – a field that examines the conditions in space created by solar activity. To characterize these impacts, he employs simulations using modern tools and available data to forecast coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and solar flares.

His approach combines magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models with machine learning techniques and aims to improve the accuracy of space weather predictions.

Georgia State Launches Graduate Mentoring Website

Georgia State has launched a new graduate mentoring website at https://graduatementoring.gsu.edu to provide useful resources for both faculty and students in this important aspect of graduate education.

A project of the Graduate School and the Office of Faculty Affairs, it has a wealth of useful advice, references, trainings, guides and other resources aimed at strengthening the mentoring experience between faculty and students.

Celebrating Faculty Excellence ’24: Awards, Photos, and Promotion & Tenure List

Georgia State University honored exceptional faculty with the Celebrating Faculty Excellence event. Honorees included newly appointed and re-appointed Regents’ Professors and GSU Distinguished University Professors, as well as GSU faculty award winners and newly promoted and/or tenured faculty. The event also recognized the Experiential, Project-based, Interdisciplinary Curriculum (EPIC) program, which was the inaugural recipient of the University System of Georgia’s Regents’ Award for Excellence in High Impact Practices and Experiential Learning.

Beth Myers Appointed Assistant Provost for Faculty Success

Dr. Beth Myers has been named Assistant Provost for Faculty Success effective Jan. 6, 2025.

In her new role, Dr. Myers will manage faculty leadership development programs, oversee continuous improvement of faculty policies, and collaborate with academic units to advance professional development initiatives that align with Georgia State’s strategic goals.

Her extensive experience will enhance efforts to support faculty across the university through customized development programs and ongoing mentorship.
