Cohort for the 2024-25 Executive Leadership Academy for Women (ELAW) Selected

The Office of the Provost and the Office of Faculty Affairs are proud to announce the members of the 2024-25 Executive Leadership Academy for Women (ELAW) cohort.

This cohort-based leadership development program seeks to empower current and emerging leaders on the Georgia State staff who are committed to self-discovery, lifelong learning, career advancement, and leading from where they are.

ELAW provides professional development to help staff members build the skills necessary to be successful, regardless of whether they are in a new role or are more experienced supervisors who have not had formal leadership training.

2023-24 Cohorts of the Executive Leadership Academy for Women and the Leadership Academy for Women Faculty Celebrate Graduation

Participants in the 2023-24 cohorts of the Executive Leadership Academy for Women (ELAW) and the Leadership Academy for Women Faculty (LAWF) celebrated the completion of their leadership programs this April.

Celebrations took place at Centennial Hall on April 12 for LAWF and April 17 for ELAW, with friends, colleagues and family in attendance for each graduation.

ELAW, for staff, and LAWF, for faculty, are eight-month cohort-based leadership development programs, seeking to empower current and emerging leaders who are committed to self-discovery, lifelong learning, career advancement, and leading from where they are.

High School Students Solve Real-World University Challenges

Students of the Veritas School of Social Sciences came together at Georgia State University on Wednesday (June 28, 2023) to learn more by tackling challenges that corporate and institutional leaders face — including at the university itself.

The Veritas Corporate Immersion Day brought more than 35 students ages 14 through 17 to Georgia State, where they heard from university leaders and were tasked with forming potential solutions to issues ranging from cybersecurity training, student engagement and operational matters to student involvement, enrollment and course success.

The Veritas School provides access to academic and professional skills training that places students on pathways to excellence at colleges and universities, and toward high-earning careers. The aim is to close academic opportunity and economic inequality gaps for Black and brown students through programs like Veritas Corporate Immersion, a debate institute, a global travel program and programs in career readiness along with K-12 teacher training.

Department of Africana Studies Commemorates 1992 Sit-In that Led to the Department’s Creation

Georgia State University’s Department of Africana Studies will commemorate and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1992 sit-in on campus that led to the creation of the department and other efforts to embrace diversity on campus. The department will host a series of virtual and in-person events from Monday, Oct. 31 through Sunday, Nov. 6 that are free and open to the campus community and public at large.

The 1992 sit-in a was part of protests led by African American students after a racial slur was written on a trash can on campus. Their protests, sit-in and demands in Georgia State’s Sparks Hall challenged the school administration to make the campus a safer place for Black students, women and the LGBTQIA community. The principal demand was for a Department of African American Studies.

Georgia State University ranked first among public institutions in sending the most African American students to study abroad. It also ranked 11th among public institutions in sending the most students from racial and ethnic minority students to study abroad.
