Edvige Jean-François, an award-winning global journalist and producer, has been named as the inaugural executive director of the Center for Studies on Africa and Its Diaspora (CSAD) at Georgia State effective July 1.
Beginning this year, Georgia State University will recognize Juneteenth as an official holiday. Juneteenth National Independence Day, which falls on Sunday, June 19, will be observed Monday, June 20, and all Georgia State campuses will be closed.
Dr. Lakeyta Bonnette-Bailey, Associate Professor of Africana Studies and the pre-Ph.D. faculty associate for CASA (Center for Advancement of Students and Alumni), is writing a book tentatively entitled “What’s on Your Radio? Rap Music and Racial Attitudes” that will observe the relationship between exposure to political rap music and racial attitudes.
Dr. K. Jurée Capers, an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Management and Policy at Georgia State University, is investigating the connection between social and racial equity in the world of politics. Through approaching this overlap with the lens of racial equity Capers examines impact in historically marginalized populations with a focus on education.
“I come from a family of educators, and I also grew up in a rural area [of South Carolina] where the quality of education differs significantly from what you experience in a more urban and suburban areas,” she said.
When the education systems that are available to students are different in quality, this drastically alters the students’ competitiveness prior to setting foot in the wider world and job market. She became aware of how to have an impact on the problem from living in it.
The Office of the Provost has published its first progress report on an action plan that aims the university toward meeting the transformative recommendations by the Task Force for Racial Equality.
The report covers progress across 25 action steps through the end of calendar year 2020.
The work continues on the action plan, and a second progress report will be published by the Provost’s Office following the conclusion of the spring 2021 semester.

The Implementation Steering Committee for the Next Generation of Faculty has issued its December 2020 progress report for Georgia State’s efforts in improving faculty recruitment and faculty retention.
Each report breaks down progress on action steps as outlined for implementation based on the recommendations of the Commission for the Next Generation of Faculty.
The Commission for the Next Generation of Faculty was established in 2017 to recommend “programs and strategies to strengthen, distinguish, and diversify Georgia State University’s faculty. The Commission was charged with addressing Goal 4, Initiative 3 of the GSU Strategic Plan which states that the university will be a ‘nationally recognized model for leadership in inclusion.’
