Elizabeth West Honored by the College Language Association with Annual Book Award for “Finding Francis: One Family’s Journey from Slavery to Freedom”

Dr. Elizabeth West, Professor of English and Africana Studies, has been honored by the College Language Association (CLA) with its annual book award for Finding Francis: One Family’s Journey from Slavery to Freedom.

The CLA is one of the nation’s oldest professional associations of Black scholars, founded in 1937 by Black collegiate scholars of English and world languages.

Dr. West’s book (University of South Carolina Press) tells the story of Francis Sistrunk and her children, from enslavement into force migration across the deep South. Spanning both the antebellum period on through post-emancipation America, it reclaims and honors those women to were essential in the historic survival and triumph of Black people during and after the institution of slavery in the United States.

Blueprint to 2033: Our Place, Our Time – University Senate Approves New Strategic Plan

The Georgia State University Senate approved a new strategic plan April 5, establishing a 10-year blueprint for the institution.

The new strategic plan builds upon the previous plan, which helped transform Georgia State into the national model of an urban research university. Titled “Blueprint to 2033: Our Place, Our Time,” the new plan builds upon the four major pillars identified by President M. Brian Blake as the most impactful aspects of the university — present and future.

Those pillars are Identity, Placemaking and Belonging; Innovating Research Scholarship and Creative Activity; Student Success 2.0; and Beyond College to Career.

College of the Arts Dean Wade Weast Named American Council on Education Fellow

College of the Arts Dean Wade Weast Named American Council on Education Fellow

American Council on Education (ACE) has announced that Georgia State University College of the Arts Dean Wade Weast has been named an ACE Fellow for academic year 2023-24. Following nomination by the senior administration of their institutions and a rigorous application process, 36 Fellows were selected this year.

Since its inception in 1965, the ACE Fellows Program has strengthened institutions in American higher education by identifying and preparing over 2,500 faculty, staff and administrators for senior positions in college and university leadership through its distinctive and intensive cohort-based mentorship model.

Of the Fellows who have participated to date – including Provost Parsons-Pollard, a past ACE Fellow herself – more than 80 percent have gone on, after their fellowship, to serve as chief executive officers, chief academic officers, other cabinet-level positions and deans.

Georgia State University Wins Prestigious 2023 Senator Paul Simon Award for Outstanding Campus Internationalization

Georgia State University was selected by NAFSA: Association of International Educators to receive a 2023 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization.

Named after the late U.S. Senator Paul Simon of Illinois, the award celebrates outstanding innovation and accomplishment in campus internationalization, defined by NAFSA as a conscious effort to integrate and infuse international, intercultural and global dimensions into the ethos and outcomes of students’ education.

The Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization distinguishes overall excellence in integrating international education throughout all facets of university and college campuses.

Georgia State Online Graduate Programs Ranked Among Best by U.S. News

Three graduate programs at Georgia State University have been ranked among the best online programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report.

The U.S. News 2023 Best Online Programs rankings assessed more than 1,800 graduate and undergraduate programs offered online by regionally accredited institutions — the highest number of degree programs evaluated in the online rankings’ 11-year history.

Georgia State’s College of Education & Human Development was recognized with two highly placed rankings: a tie at No. 19 in the category of Best Online Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction Programs and a tie at No. 69 in the Best Online Master’s in Education Programs category.
