Jordan Madden Earns Trotter Award for Outstanding Student Leadership and Involvement

Jordan Madden of Atlanta was honored with Georgia State University’s Nell Hamilton Trotter Award during the university’s 110th commencement exercises in May.

The award recognizes an outstanding commitment to student involvement and is the highest student leadership award presented by the university.

Kyle Frantz Appointed Senior Director of New Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry

Georgia State University has named Kyle Frantz as the inaugural senior director of the new Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry (CURCI), effective July 1. Dr. Frantz brings extensive experience in research, education and student mentorship, equipping her to lead the center in its mission to expand opportunities for research, scholarship and creativity for undergraduates across all disciplines.

A professor and science educator in Georgia State’s Neuroscience Institute and Department of Biology, Frantz has dedicated her career to advancing student success through hands-on research experiences.

Open Resources, Open Futures – How Faculty Can Help Reduce the Cost of Textbooks

Key to student success is access to course materials – textbooks in particular – but the rising cost of them makes it difficult for some Georgia State students to afford them. Provost Nicolle Parsons-Pollard has urged faculty to find ways to reduce textbook costs, and the university continues to make progress: more than 60 percent of undergraduate courses at GSU now use low- or no-cost textbooks.

The Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning & Online Education has excellent resources to help faculty expand affordability and open opportunity, and Cyntoria Johnson, Faculty Associate for Teaching Effectiveness and faculty member in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, shares some practices, tips and examples of how GSU is putting this effort into action.

This year’s theme was “Scholarship for a Better World: Empowering Change, Inspiring Action.”

The Graduate Conference for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity offers a platform for graduate students from all disciplines to showcase their scholarly and creative endeavors.

More than 600 Participate in the GSU 2025 MLK Day of Service

More than 600 Georgia State University students, faculty and staff participated in the 2025 MLK Day of Service on Jan. 20, volunteering in projects serving seniors, youth, people who are unhoused, members of the military, and other members of the greater community.

Each year Georgia State honors The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and work with numerous activities in January. Campus events feature lectures, discussions, celebration, and community service opportunities that reflect his dream and vision for civil rights and social justice.

The 2025 MLK Day of Service also included a Unity Walk from the Atlanta campus of Georgia State to The King Center via Sweet Auburn in honor of Dr. King.
