GSU’s Microcredential Initiative: Elevating Skills and Credentials for Learner Success

The landscape of higher education is expanding rapidly, and GSU innovatively embraces this expansion while always keeping our learners at the center, providing them with meaningful, verifiable credentials.

Georgia State has developed a Microcredential Framework to provide a guide for faculty to help learners document their skills and accomplishments through clear, standardized microcredentials.

Primarily offered as continuing education or professional credits, these microcredentials provide faculty with a means to help learners showcase demonstrated competencies. This initiative aligns with two pillars of GSU’s strategic plan, Student Success and Beyond College to Career, broadening learners’ career pathways, improving outcomes, and enhancing lifelong learning opportunities.

Jon Thompson, a Georgia State University (GSU) graduate with a master’s degree in social work, has devoted his professional life to making a difference both locally and globally.

Through his innovative initiative, Comunidad Connect, Mr. Thompson has not only transformed the lives of underserved communities in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic but has also provided invaluable learning opportunities for current GSU graduate students in various healthcare fields.

Mr. Thompson’s journey and his collaboration with GSU are helping shape the next generation of healthcare professionals and the future of community-based partnerships.

Teaching & Learning: School of Public Health Faculty Member Explores Using AI to Enhance Biostatistics Learning

Assistant Professor of Biostatistics Karen Nielsen, of Georgia State’s School of Public Health, is developing course materials that will prepare students to ethically and effectively use generative artificial intelligence in a range of quantitative subjects.

The course materials will be available to faculty across the institution and will include general content on ethical considerations and privacy concerns, as well as specific information on using generative AI for learning statistics concepts and improving programming skills.

Nielsen’s work is supported by the university’s Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Online Education (CETLOE).

Georgia State Opens New Dental Hygiene Clinic at Dunwoody Campus of Perimeter College

Georgia State University celebrated the opening of the new Dental Hygiene Clinic at the Dunwoody Campus of Perimeter College on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new $6.3 million facility expands the university’s ability to provide dental care to the local community and to address the demand for dental hygienists. Nearly 8,000 square feet large, the facility contains 20 operatories with the latest equipment and technology.

The new clinic replaces a 1970s-era facility that had a smaller capacity to provide care and training. Services provided by the clinic include, but are not limited to, oral exams, cancer screenings, dental cleanings and X-rays.
