December 2020 Next Generation of Faculty Implementation Steering Committee Report Now Available

The Implementation Steering Committee for the Next Generation of Faculty has issued its December 2020 progress report for Georgia State’s efforts in improving faculty recruitment and faculty retention.

Each report breaks down progress on action steps as outlined for implementation based on the recommendations of the Commission for the Next Generation of Faculty.

The Commission for the Next Generation of Faculty was established in 2017 to recommend “programs and strategies to strengthen, distinguish, and diversify Georgia State University’s faculty. The Commission was charged with addressing Goal 4, Initiative 3 of the GSU Strategic Plan which states that the university will be a ‘nationally recognized model for leadership in inclusion.’

Presentation of the Preliminary Results from the COACHE Faculty Satisfaction Survey

Provost Hensel shared with the university community on Sept. 24 the preliminary results from the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) Faculty Satisfaction Survey, considered the gold standard in measuring faculty satisfaction and part of Georgia State’s implementation of recommendations from the Commission for the Next Generation of Faculty. The results cover all aspects of faculty life at the downtown and Perimeter campuses.

President Becker Announces Major Actions to Advance Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Georgia State

President Mark Becker announced on July 27 three major actions that the university is taking to address diversity, equity and inclusion at the university.

This includes the establishment of the university’s first Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Diversity Dialogues during the 2020-21 academic year, and the establishment of a student scholarship in honor of Myra Payne Elliott, Barbara Pace Hunt and Iris Mae Welch, who filed suit to integrate Georgia State in the 1950s.

Georgia State Creates Center For Studies On Africa And Its Diaspora

Georgia State’s College of Arts & Sciences has established the Center for Studies on Africa and its Diaspora, a multidisciplinary hub for the exchange of cultural, scientific, economic, policy and humanities knowledge within the university, and with local and global communities and collaborators.

The center will support research and academic initiatives, artistic efforts and public programming, including exhibits, lectures and conferences, and advance policy proposals that target issues of concern to the African diaspora across the university and the broader community.

The formation of the center addresses one of the key recommendations of Georgia State’s Commission for the Next Generation of Faculty, which was tasked with identifying strategies for the university to address faculty diversity, equity and inclusion. The commission delivered its recommendations in June 2019.

Inaugural Groundbreaker Lecture on Feb. 20 Honors 3 Women Who Fought to End Segregation at Georgia State

The Office of the Provost will hold its inaugural Groundbreaker Lecture on Thursday, February 20, honoring three of the brave women who sued to desegregate Georgia State University. The lecture will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Speaker’s Auditorium in Student Center East. At this event, Dr. Maurice C. Daniels will discuss his new book, “Ground Crew: The Fight to End Segregation at Georgia State.”

The book tells the story of the Hunt v. Arnold decision of 1959, which became the NAACP’s first federal court victory against segregated education in Georgia. Following the lecture, the university will honor Barbara Pace Hunt, Iris Mae Welch, and Myra Payne Elliott, the three lead plaintiffs who sued for the right of black students to attend Georgia State, in a special presentation. A reception and book signing, with books available for purchase, will follow.
