COACHE WORKLOAD WORKSHOP
Tuesday, May 24, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Center Parc Stadium
By Invitation Only
Georgia State identified multiple action items related to our COACHE Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey. In Building a Path Forward Together (April, 2021), we responded to the faculty needs by reviewing the data and creating several action plans to pave the path forward.
To address issues related to workload, the university will hold an invitation-only workshop on Tuesday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Georgia State’s Center Parc Stadium, 755 Hank Aaron Drive SE, Atlanta, GA 30315 (interactive university map link here).
This workshop will address Action Plans 3, 12, and 13. We’ve included them for your reference below.
Action Plan 3
Area: Nature of Work: Service
The Office of the Provost will identify best practices for allocating service assignments. In addition, all colleges will retrospectively review the apportionment of service tasks, engage in conversations with faculty members to determine the expected service load for a typical faculty member, and develop a policy for equitable distribution moving forward. Colleges will also be required to include a discussion of service, focusing on service rendered to the college or university in each annual review.
Action Plan 12
Area: Support for Research/Creative Work
The Office of the Provost will implement a Minimester pilot to explore, among other things, whether giving faculty members the option of more flexible teaching schedules may support them to develop more active research agendas.
Action Plan 13
Area: Support for Research/Creative Work
The Office of the Provost, in conjunction with the Faculty Senate, will examine the current Faculty Workload Policy and make changes where possible to support flexible teaching options, including course banking.
Our COACHE data revealed faculty were not satisfied with the balance between teaching, research/creative activities, and service. In the Guidance on Equity-Minded Faculty Workload (available here), we noted that our “task is ensure that the individual workloads of faculty are appropriate and balanced, so that, together, we can meet the needs of our students and accomplish the university’s mission” (p.2).
We will engage in discussions in order to address our action plans and move forward, together.
