Students Win Awards for Research Communication Skills through Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

ATLANTA–Graduate students across disciplines took top prizes in the final round of the 2021 Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, where they were charged with explaining their research in language appropriate for a non-specialist audience in a short time.

Developed by the University of Queensland in Australia in 2008, 3MT was designed to encourage students to develop their academic, presentation and research communication skills. The competition supports student abilities to explain their research in language appropriate to a non-specialized audience.

For the second year, Georgia State’s 3MT competition was held virtually, providing students with an opportunity to use different technological skills required for online presentations, compared to the skills used in in-person events.

Georgia State Ph.D. Student Wins First Place in Psych Science-in-3 At American Psychological Association Conference

CHICAGO – Mary Fernandes, a Ph.D. candidate in clinical neuropsychology at Georgia State University, won first place in the 2019 Psych Science-in-3 Competition Aug. 9 at the American Psychological Association’s (APA) annual conference.

Fernandes gave a three-minute presentation entitled, “The Associations Between Pupillary Response Patterns to Emotional Faces and Self-Reported Social Anxiety,” competing against more advanced doctoral students as well as postdoctoral contestants.

The competition required participants to explain their thesis or dissertation research succinctly, in a compelling way that non-specialists can understand. Fernandes mastered these skills at Georgia State through the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition held at the university in March, where she won first prize in the doctoral student category. She also won the People’s Choice award in the category.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Contestants Practice Explaining Research to General Audiences

Georgia State University graduate students took top prizes at the university’s Spring 2019 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition on March 25, where they were challenged to explain their research and scholarship to a general audience in a short amount of time.

3MT is a research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland in Australia in 2008. The premise of the competition is to develop academic, presentation, and research communication skills. It supports the development of students’ capacities to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience.

Seven master’s and seven doctoral students from multiple disciplines competed; a panel of judges awarded first, second and third place prizes. The audience was also given a chance to weigh in and voted for a people’s choice award in each degree category. Support for the competition was provided by the University Library and the Office of the Associate Provost for Graduate Programs.

Spring 2019 Three Minute Thesis Competition Finalists Announced, Final Round Takes Place March 25

Finalists for the Spring 2019 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition at Georgia State University were selected after a preliminary round on March 5, sponsored by the Office of the Associate Provost for Graduate Programs and the University Library. The final round will be held on March 25 at the Centennial Hall Auditorium, 100 Auburn Ave. N.E.

3MT is a research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland in Australia in 2008. Through this competition, 3MT celebrates the discoveries made by students and encourages them to further build skills in communicating the importance of research and scholarship to the broader community now and in their future careers.

Judges will award 1st, 2nd and 3rd place to the best presenters in each category for the doctoral- and master’s-level divisions. The audience will cast their vote for the People’s Choice winner. Admission to the finals is free; click on the link for more information and to RSVP.

Graduate Students Take Top Prizes at Georgia State’s Spring 2018 Three Minute Thesis Competition

Outstanding graduate students in Georgia State University’s master’s and doctoral degree programs took top prizes at the university’s Spring 2018 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition held March 26.

3MT is a research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland in Australia in 2008. The premise of the competition is to develop academic, presentation, and research communication skills. It supports the development of students’ capacities to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience.

A panel of three faculty judges evaluated the students’ presentations for the top three awards. The People’s Choice awards were determined through votes by the audience of the event, which was held at Centennial Hall.

3MT is a research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland in Australia in 2008. The premise of the competition is to develop academic, presentation, and research communication skills. It supports the development of students’ capacities to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience. The final round will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 26 in the Centennial Hall Auditorium at 100 Auburn Ave., N.E.
