Experiential, Project-based, and Interdisciplinary Learning Pilot Program Yields Promising Results, Valuable Student Experience

A Georgia State University experiential, project-based, and interdisciplinary learning pilot program is yielding promising results for student achievement following its initial semesters.

The Experiential Project-based Interdisciplinary Curriculum (EPIC) program was launched in fall 2019 to provide first-year students an opportunity to learn by doing in long-term projects that begin in core curriculum/general education courses, such as English composition or introduction to American government (political science 1101).

A preliminary analysis of grade point averages and DFW rates show a statistically significant impact, with improved GPAs, as well as a moderating effect on DFWs, especially among first-generation college students.

Georgia State’s EXLAB Makerspace Helps to Create Personal Protective Equipment During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The EXLAB makerspace at Georgia State University is helping to make and supply Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to be used by healthcare and other vital workers, as well as vulnerable community members, during the shortage caused by COVID-19. Working in cooperation with other makerspaces and maker organizations across Georgia, EXLAB volunteers and resources are contributing to create items like face shields and masks.

Digital Learners To Leaders Program Wins Education Futurist Award From Campus Technology

Georgia State University’s Digital Learners to Leaders (DLL) program has won a 2019 Campus Technology Impact Award from Campus Technology, recognizing higher education institutions that are making an extraordinary impact with technology on campus, doing important work in service of teaching, learning, administration and operations.

The award, given in the Education Futurist category by the digital publication, recognizes DLL’s focus on developing the next generation of digital problem solvers by providing students from all backgrounds, including those often underrepresented in the technology industry, opportunities to increase their technical experience while developing valuable professional skills.

Throughout the program, students from across majors and professionals from across industries work together to solve problems using the “Internet of Things,” the expanding network of everyday objects with digital capabilities.

History Department Earns Regents’ Award for Teaching Excellence by a Department or Program

History Department Earns Regents’ Award for Teaching Excellence by a Department or Program

The University System of Georgia has awarded Georgia State University’s Department of History on the downtown campus with the 2019 Regents’ Award for Teaching Excellence by a Department or Program, recognizing innovative and engaging efforts to transform teaching and learning in the department’s curriculum.

The nomination packet was submitted by Jeff Young, Rob Baker and Jared Poley, who have worked together to include data visualization, in addition to the incorporation of the Reacting to the Past (RTTP) teaching and learning concept in history courses, and redesign of U.S. history and world history courses.

These efforts have resulted in an increase in student engagement, and a reduction in DFW rates – the rates of students who either earn grades of D or F, or withdraw from the course.

Georgia State Takes the Spotlight for Incorporating Innovative “Reacting to the Past” Concept to Teach History and Leadership

Georgia State University was recently featured in the Campus Spotlight section of the Reacting to the Past program website, highlighting how the university has used the innovative concept to teach history and leadership in a different and exciting way.

Reacting to the Past (RTTP) consists of elaborate games, set in the past, in which students are assigned roles informed by classic texts in the history of ideas. Class sessions are run entirely by students; instructors advise and guide students and grade their oral and written work. It seeks to draw students into the past, promote engagement with big ideas, and improve intellectual and academic skills. Reacting roles, unlike those in a play, do not have a fixed script and outcome, so while students will be obliged to adhere to the philosophical and intellectual beliefs of the historical figures they have been assigned to play, they must devise their own means of expressing those ideas persuasively, in papers, speeches, or other public presentations; and students must also pursue a course of action they think will help them win the game.

State Farm $55,000 Award Supports Digital Literacy At Georgia State

Georgia State University’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) has received a $55,000 award from State Farm to expand programs and events to promote digital literacy.

The award will fund increased access to workshops and events held by two organizations sponsored by CETL, the Digital Learners to Leaders program and PantherHackers student organization. Both organizations encourage students to explore technology through project-based and experiential learning.
