Graduate Studies: Georgia State Doctoral Students Selected for American Institutes for Research Fellowship

Three Georgia State University doctoral students in the College of Education & Human Development (CEHD) have been selected for the American Institutes for Research’s (AIR) Pipeline Partnership Program Fellowship.

AIR is a nonprofit organization that conducts research in social and behavioral sciences. Its fellowship program is designed to reinforce and expand the pipeline of scholars conducting research in those fields.

As fellows, doctoral students Roti Chakraborty, Kristin Hemingway and Alexandria M. Johnson will each receive two-year dissertation grants and a one-year, paid post-doctoral fellowship at AIR.

Confronting Equity in STEM Education

Growing up in the 1970s and ‘80s, Brian Williams’ experiences in school were often shaped by race and culture. “Some teachers would have lowered expectations, telling me, ‘You’re not cutting the mustard,’ or ‘You’re not as good as everybody else.’ And that can really create a horrible schooling experience for children,” he said. “Not only could I not see myself in the curriculum, but I was told very early on that I was not very good at math and science. I never want another child to have that experience.”

As a clinical professor in the department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education in the College of Education and Human Development, Williams works to ensure all children have access to an excellent education. He serves as the director of the Alonzo A. Crim Center for Urban Educational Excellence, where he works with a team of faculty and staff to advocate for young people in urban communities and identify and remove the roadblocks they face in public education.

Georgia State Faculty Create Professional Development Program To Improve Access, Equity in Elementary School Science Education

Georgia State University College of Education & Human Development faculty members Brian Williams, Nancy Schafer and Diane Truscott have established a new project to provide access to quality science instruction at Title I elementary schools in Atlanta.

Williams, Schafer and Truscott will design and implement a new professional development model called the Sci-Bridge Project for teachers and teachers-in-training that combines best practices in science education with teaching methods that are most effective for students from diverse, low-income communities.

They’ll lead a summer academy and series of workshops for 30 College of Education & Human Development teacher education students and 20 science teachers who will go on to impact about 1,420 students in metro-Atlanta schools.

Researcher Awarded $3 Million Federal Grant To Study Writing Intervention

Georgia State University College of Education & Human Development associate professor Cynthia Puranik has received a five-year, $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences to study a writing intervention program.

The grant project, entitled, “Peer Assisted Writing Strategies (PAWS): Efficacy,” will test the effectiveness of the PAWS writing intervention in improving writing outcomes for young, beginning writers.

The PAWS intervention pairs students together to work on various writing lessons, which include writing letters, punctuation, spelling and sentence construction.
