From the Provost: College of the Arts Leadership Announcement

Provost Nicolle Parsons-Pollard has appointed three faculty members to important leadership positions within the College of the Arts, including Chester Phillips as interim dean and Susan Richmond as interim associate dean of the college, and Michael White as permanent director for the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design.

Dr. Phillips will serve as interim dean from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024 during the American Council on Education fellowship of Dean Wade Weast. Dr. Richmond will also serve from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024 as interim associate dean. Director White, who served from 2012 to 2018, became permanent director on May 1, 2023.

College of the Arts Dean Wade Weast Named American Council on Education Fellow

College of the Arts Dean Wade Weast Named American Council on Education Fellow

American Council on Education (ACE) has announced that Georgia State University College of the Arts Dean Wade Weast has been named an ACE Fellow for academic year 2023-24. Following nomination by the senior administration of their institutions and a rigorous application process, 36 Fellows were selected this year.

Since its inception in 1965, the ACE Fellows Program has strengthened institutions in American higher education by identifying and preparing over 2,500 faculty, staff and administrators for senior positions in college and university leadership through its distinctive and intensive cohort-based mentorship model.

Of the Fellows who have participated to date – including Provost Parsons-Pollard, a past ACE Fellow herself – more than 80 percent have gone on, after their fellowship, to serve as chief executive officers, chief academic officers, other cabinet-level positions and deans.

Chester Phillips Appointed Director of the School of Music

Chester Phillips Appointed Director of the School of Music

The College of the Arts at Georgia State University announced the appointment of Chester Phillips as director of the School of Music, where he has served as interim director since July 2021.

Phillips has served on the faculty at Georgia State University since 2009 and was recently promoted to professor. As the founding director of Athletic Bands, he established the award-winning Georgia State University Panther Band, which has performed in the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Parade, 2014 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Super Bowl LIII Pepsi Halftime Show in 2019 and will perform in the 2022 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif.
