State Farm Award Supports Digital Literacy Through Learning Community Development at Georgia State

Georgia State University’s Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Online Education (CETLOE) has received a $48,000 award from State Farm to expand development of online learning communities focused on helping students obtain technology and career skills through project-based learning and mentorship.

The award will support professionally-led virtual events, including a bootcamp on cloud-based programming and a series of workshops aimed at helping students identify and leverage career strengths. The award also funds extension of CETLOE’s Digital Learners to Leaders program.

The Digital Learners to Leaders program offers undergraduate coursework and events designed to inspire students, particularly those from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the technology industry, to strengthen their digital skills through problem solving, exposure to emerging technologies and guidance from a diverse set of technology professionals across Atlanta’s education, business, government and non-profit communities. In addition to undergraduate coursework, an online summer camp for middle and high school students introduces coding, digital creation and esports.

Digital Learners To Leaders Program Wins Education Futurist Award From Campus Technology

Georgia State University’s Digital Learners to Leaders (DLL) program has won a 2019 Campus Technology Impact Award from Campus Technology, recognizing higher education institutions that are making an extraordinary impact with technology on campus, doing important work in service of teaching, learning, administration and operations.

The award, given in the Education Futurist category by the digital publication, recognizes DLL’s focus on developing the next generation of digital problem solvers by providing students from all backgrounds, including those often underrepresented in the technology industry, opportunities to increase their technical experience while developing valuable professional skills.

Throughout the program, students from across majors and professionals from across industries work together to solve problems using the “Internet of Things,” the expanding network of everyday objects with digital capabilities.

The world is changing at an unprecedented rate. Computers are being integrated into devices ranging from stoplights to smart speakers. Sensors collect immense amounts of data providing insights into everything from our health to what motivates us. Robotics and 3D printing are reshaping manufacturing processes. Renewable energy and artificial intelligence are reinventing industries from transportation to telecommunication.

These fast-paced changes are ushering in what many refer to as a Fourth Industrial Revolution, profoundly altering how we live, work and interact. This oncoming revolution makes it imperative that educational institutions consider how best to prepare students with an understanding of the complex impact these technologies have. How can automated decision-making be implemented ethically? How can students be ready for a world in which their co-worker could be a machine? At Georgia State, our goal is to ensure every student is ready to flourish in this world of the future.

While digital skills are a crucial piece of educating students for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we cannot lose sight of the human element and the increasing importance of collaboration, communication and compassion as technology advances.
