Jennifer Sherer Named Executive Officer for Entrepreneurship at Georgia State University

Jennifer Sherer has been named the executive officer for entrepreneurship at Georgia State University. The appointment represents a continuation of the university’s goal to strengthen the culture of entrepreneurship and innovation across campus.

Sherer will continue to serve as the director of the Entrepreneurship & Innovation Institute (ENI), which is supported by the J. Mack Robinson College of Business. She has held this position since joining Georgia State in 2018.

In her new role within the Office of the Provost, Sherer will represent the university on entrepreneurship-related matters in the greater community and lead a university-wide entrepreneurship working group.

Georgia State Varsity Esports Wins At National Fall Collegiate SMITE Tournament

Georgia State University’s varsity esports team won the national fall collegiate tournament in the video game “SMITE” on Nov. 17 at Dreamhack Atlanta, a large esports and digital festival attracting thousands in person and many more viewing through the Twitch platform.

The Georgia State Esports program is housed in the Creative Media Industries Institute (CMII), and has oversight by the Executive Officer for Entrepreneurship in the Office of the Provost. Technical, logistical and production support is provided by the university’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Varsity esports provide benefits beyond game play, including student participation in broadcasting, production, marketing, management and game development, a rapidly growing part of Georgia’s entertainment industry. The game “SMITE” is one example — the game is produced by Hi-Rez Studios, based in metro Atlanta.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Fall 2019 PantherLAN Esports Tournament Held Nov. 9

Georgia State University’s fourth semi-annual PantherLAN Esports Tournament was held Nov. 9, 2019, featuring varsity players from around the region, Georgia State’s own varsity esports team, as well as exhibitions and workshops by local firms and organizations involved in the game development and entertainment industries.

Esports at Georgia State are housed in the Creative Media Industries Institute, and have oversight by the Executive Officer for Entrepreneurship, who reports to the Provost, with technical, logistical and support from the university’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Applications for Faculty Workshops on Entrepreneurship & Innovation Accepted through March 23

Don’t miss out! The Office of the Provost is continuing to accept applications through March 23 for an exciting faculty development opportunity. A one week, 20-hour course in innovation and entrepreneurship will be offered the week of May 14-18 to bring a fresh perspective to your research and scholarship with innovation and divergent thinking.

Whether you are a bench scientist interested in taking your discoveries to market, a faculty member with a keen interest in starting a business or a faculty member wanting to enrich his or her own research and teaching with an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset, there is a track for you. This opportunity is open to all full-time faculty, across all disciplines of research and scholarship at the university. Participating faculty will receive a stipend for participating in a workshop.

Georgia State Marks Opening of LaunchGSU, An Incubator for Student Entrepreneurship

Georgia State University marked the opening Feb. 21 of LaunchGSU, its new incubator for student entrepreneurship and innovation in the newly renovated 58 Edgewood Ave. N.E. building.

LaunchGSU, open to students with ideas for startup businesses, provides space to work, meet and hold events. For students accepted to the program, LaunchGSU offers technology, 24/7 access, a mailing address for their startup businesses, workshops, panels, talks and tours of other downtown Atlanta startup spaces, and connections to successful entrepreneurs in Atlanta.

It is part of Georgia State’s efforts to increase entrepreneurship and innovation at the university and to build an infrastructure that supports the acquisition of technical and critical thinking skills through learning, discovery, experimentation, prototyping and execution.
