Faculty Profile: Sonal Dekhane, Computer Information Systems

After spending the last 17 years as a faculty member and serving in leadership positions at Georgia Gwinnett College, Dr. Sonal Dekhane recently joined Georgia State University’s family as a faculty member in the Computer Information Systems (CIS) Department. Throughout her career in higher education, she has dedicated time to curriculum development, program assessment and student success.

Now, as part of Georgia State’s CIS Department at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business, her mission continues to center around helping students succeed, particularly those from historically underrepresented populations in the computing field.

Faculty Spotlight – Julian Hill and Susan Chase: Co-Directing the New Community Development & Entrepreneurship Law Clinic

Julian Hill and Susan Chase co-direct the new Community Development & Entrepreneurship Law Clinic (CDELC) at the Georgia State University College of Law.

The CDELC provides free legal services for start-up enterprises, one of the few places in Atlanta to do so. Taking initial shape from a course proposal by Hill, an Assistant Professor of Law, in 2022, Hill and Chase, an Assistant Clinical Professor, seek to address a need that small businesses, social enterprises, cooperatives and nonprofits need to thrive.

By addressing critical legal needs, the clinic equips local organizations to navigate complex legal requirements and keep their organizations in compliance.

Dr. Jeffrey Lazarus is a Professor of Political Science at Georgia State University. His focus is on how the interpersonal environment between members of Congress impacts their decision making. Through his research he aspires to spread awareness of the political process, resulting in more informed and active participants in the political process.

Faculty Spotlight: Past and Present – How a Georgia State Professor Analyzes History to Examine Modern American Politics

David Sehat is a professor of intellectual and cultural history at Georgia State. He is interested in how changes in cultural and intellectual life have affected American politics throughout the modern period, a critical project that seeks to use the past to understand the present.

Sehat deploys this critical approach in a variety of ways, nowhere more consistently than in the production of his podcast, titled ‘MindPop.’ He asks people from a variety of backgrounds to bring their specialties to bear on contemporary events.

Guests have included scholars such as Timothy Lytton, a Distinguished University Professor of Law at Georgia State who is an expert in gun and product liability; Nadia Hilliard, a politics scholar at University College London; and Tim Hwang, the former Director of the Ethics and Governance of AI Initiative at Harvard and MIT.

Georgia State Professor Employs Philosophical Techniques to Help Address Modern Social Crises

Growing up on Long Island, Dr. Andrew Cohen first found his love for the critical and theoretical in his high school history class. Cohen’s teacher, like any educator should hope to do, instilled a genuine curiosity in his students—they began seeking novel, intricate ideas both in and out of the classroom. Cohen said this experience in his education put him on the path to pursue philosophical endeavors moving forward.

In his undergraduate academic career, Cohen was exposed to different methods of philosophical thinking in Binghamton, N.Y., and fell in love with it. He went on to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in their Philosophy doctoral program. Years after, he found himself at Georgia State.

Philosophy can be abstract and difficult to pin down at times, but Cohen’s work focuses on something more tangible, more real—historical injustice. For the past decade, Cohen has been working on what it is that we, whether it be individuals, corporations, states, owe to one another following a history stricken with injustices.
