With $52 million in federal funding, researchers at Emory University and Georgia State University will establish a groundbreaking new drug development center aimed at preventing the next pandemic.
Georgia State University faculty set an institutional record, earning $150.2 million in research funding in fiscal year 2020. The record surpasses the previous high of $147 million set in fiscal year 2017 and is $22 million higher than the previous year’s total. This is the sixth consecutive year research awards have topped $100 million, and the first year awards have exceeded $150 million.
Among the university’s top 20 grant recipients, 12 are women. Thirty-three investigators brought in more than $1 million each. The College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Public Health and the College of Education and Human Development each set college funding records.
Georgia State is one of only 115 public and private universities in the Carnegie Foundation’s elite category of R1: Highest Research Activity. For the past three years, the university has been the highest-ranked institution without an engineering, medical or agricultural school in the National Science Foundation’s Higher Education Research and Development survey, a nationally recognized barometer of university research activity.
An increased number of students will be able to take advantage of the Georgia State University Prison Education Project (GSUPEP), thanks to a federal grant program.
The GSUPEP has been invited to participate in the federal Second-Chance Pell — Pell for Incarcerated Students Experiment. The program is under the U.S. Department of Education’s Experimental Sites Initiative.
The university is one of five postsecondary institutions in Georgia invited to join the grant initiative, which allows incarcerated individuals to receive federal funding to enroll in postsecondary programs offered by local colleges and universities or distance-learning providers.
A $600,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), with matching funding from Georgia State University, will bring a 7 Tesla (7T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine to Georgia State.
MRI scanners use powerful magnets to produce three-dimensional images of anatomical structures. High-field instruments such as the 7T are distinguished by the strength of the magnetic field, which allows much clearer resolution for research and disease diagnosis. Compared to the more common 3T MRI imager, the 7T produces an unprecedented level of detail and allows researchers to perform non-invasive imaging of microscopic structures inside the bodies and brains of living animals.
The addition of this new technology, used in a handful of universities in the Southeast, will make Georgia State a hub for MRI research, allowing faculty to conduct animal research using one of the world’s strongest imaging machines available for the detection of disease.
College of Education & Human Development Assistant Professors Natalie King and Lauren Margulieux have been chosen for the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development Program.
King will receive $1.1 million for a five-year project entitled, “Black Girl Brilliance and STEM Identity Development,” which will allow her to continue her work with students at Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy, an all-girls, STEM-certified middle and high school in Atlanta. She’ll explore how Black girls excel in STEM learning spaces and the factors that may predict whether or not a student declares a STEM major in college.
Margulieux will receive $486,631 for a five-year project entitled, “Spreading Computational Literacy Equitably via Integration of Computing in Preservice Teacher Preparation.” This project will integrate computing coursework into all teacher preparation programs at Georgia State University with the goal of preparing teachers across disciplines to be comfortable incorporating computing-integrated activities in their lessons.
Researchers in Georgia State University’s School of Public Health have been awarded a five-year, $3.15 million grant by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s National Cancer Institute to further develop and evaluate a text messaging program to help people quit smoking.
The program, iQuit Mindfully, combines mobile health technology (mHealth) with mindfulness training to provide round-the-clock smoking cessation support for low-income smokers. The study will be led by Claire Spears, a clinical psychologist and assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy & Behavioral Sciences in the School of Public Health.
The grant will fund a study to test the effectiveness of personalized and interactive iQuit Mindfully text messages among this demographic compared to in-person mindfulness-based addiction treatment and usual care. The researchers will also investigate the mechanisms through which both methods affect smoking cessation.
